The tournament joins the American and Australian Opens in utilizing replay systems.
Replay technology are set to arrive at Wimbledon this year.
Competitors will gain the option to challenge certain rulings from the official, echoing the protocol already in operation at both the US Open and the Aussie major.
The new system is slated for use on Centre Court and the number one court throughout the tournament and on the other four show courts when they are hosting singles contests.
This development follows just a season following the AELTC rolled out electronic line calling, which brought an end to the 147-year role of line judges.
Reviewable Decisions
Players will not be permitted to dispute the call of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to request the umpire to re-examine specific situations, such as:
- Whether a tennis ball has bounced twice.
- Whether a shot touched an opponent's racquet or body during play.
- Possible interference at the conclusion of a rally.
Notably, there is no cap on the amount of challenges a player can ask for.
Practical Application
An illustrative example took place in Indian Wells recently, where Daniil Medvedev used the review system against his opponent.
Draper admitted it was a difficult situation for the umpire, but thought his opponent had "played the rules effectively."
The umpire viewed a replay and ruled Draper was responsible for hindrance, awarding the rally to Medvedev.
Wider Implementation
Video reviews aren't exclusive to major tournaments. It has been in use at the American major for two years and the Aussie Open this year.
Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by next season the men's ATP Tour will have the system implemented at all of its tournaments.
Further Updates
A further change at The Championships 2025 involves the addition of graphical cues on displays to support the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.
This addresses situations where fans have sometimes been unsure if a ball was in or out.
In other news, with precisely 100 days remaining until the start of the Championships, organizers have further revealed an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
